What you'll accomplish

By the end of this guide, you'll be able to ask plain-language questions about your department's general orders or state statutes and get direct, cited answers — instead of digging through a 400-page policy PDF to find the two sentences you need. This works on your phone, at your desk, or before a shift.

What you'll need

  • A free Claude account (claude.ai — free tier handles this task well)
  • Optional: Claude Pro ({{tool:Claude.price}}) if your policy manual is very long
  • Your department's General Orders / Policy Manual — the PDF or printed version (usually available on your department intranet or as a public document)
  • Time needed: 20-30 minutes to set up; 2-3 minutes per policy question after
  • Cost: Free (Claude free tier works for most policy documents under 100 pages per session)
  • CJIS reminder: Department general orders are typically non-sensitive administrative documents. Do not paste documents containing confidential operational plans, investigative files, or personal officer information.
